HealthyCT, Connecticut’s new Consumer-Operated and Oriented Plan (CO-OP) for health insurance, is pleased to announce that longtime Connecticut physician Russell J. Munson, MD, FAAFP, has returned to our state to serve as the company’s Chief Medical Officer. Before assuming his role with HealthyCT, Dr. Munson served in senior executive health plan and hospital positions in Massachusetts for the past seven years.
Prior to his time in the Bay State, Dr. Munson was a practicing family physician for 20 years in Chester and held many medical staff leadership positions at Middlesex Hospital, including five years as the medical director for Integrated Resources for the Middlesex Area, LLC, the physician-hospital organization responsible for quality, utilization management, case management and contract performance (an Accountable Care Organization, or ACO). In 2002, Dr. Munson became the medical director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut, with special focus on hospitalist programs, IPA pay-for-performance quality initiatives, and national and regional responsibilities. The latter included credentialing and the national Medical Policy Committee for Anthem/Wellpoint.
“HealthyCT is the most exciting new thing to happen in health insurance in Connecticut in the last 20 years. It’s not-for-profit, doesn’t pay dividends, isn’t beholding to Wall Street, but rather to its members and its physician sponsors – that’s what makes it unique and interesting,” Dr. Munson said. “I am particularly excited to come back to the state where I started my residency in 1979 and was active in my town, my medical staff and the medical community statewide. I now get to be part of the same community with the benefit of additional outside experience.”
“Dr. Munson comes to us with qualities that reflect our values at HealthyCT. Not only does he bring significant experience as a health insurance medical executive, but also as a primary care physician who practiced here for two decades,” said Ken Lalime, HealthyCT CEO. “Dr. Munson
knows and understands Connecticut patients, physicians and hospitals. This will enable HealthyCT to implement the patient-centered care that is at the core of our business.”
Dr. Munson’s professional experience includes 20 years as Chester’s director of health, 15 years as medical director of Chesterfield’s Chronic and Convalescent Hospital, visiting nurse association advisor, and extensive involvement with local and statewide independent practitioner associations (IPAs). A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Munson completed his undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed the family medicine residency program at Middlesex Hospital. A fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, he is board-certified in family medicine and geriatrics and is a longstanding member of the American College of Physician Executives.
