HealthyCT, Connecticut’s non-profit health insurance CO-OP, and Sow Fresh Organics are pleased to announce a partnership that expands the health insurer’s ground-breaking healthy eating initiative to Hartford, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Tolland counties. In July, HealthyCT enhanced its wellness program with a national pilot to provide discounts and free delivery on locally grown and produced food products to residents in Fairfield County. With the Sow Fresh Organics partnership, Connecticut consumers in the state’s largest population centers along the I-91, I-95 and Route 9 corridors now can benefit from the same 10% discount and free delivery simply by accessing Sow Fresh Organics through the HealthyCT website at www.HealthyCT.org.

Middletown-based Sow Fresh Organics works with organic and all-natural farmers and food producers across Connecticut to provide weekly deliveries of baskets of locally produced goods. Shoppers place orders online for a bushel basket of produce and can add dairy, meats, artisan specialties and other products to their orders. Food deliveries occur on Thursdays and can be delivered to a home or business.

“HealthyCT has been overwhelmed by the positive public response to its healthy eating project. What we eat is the foundation for good health. Sow Fresh Organics has the distribution capacity to bring fresh, local food to residents from Windsor Locks to New Haven and from Mystic to Avon,” said HealthyCT CEO Ken Lalime. “Some of the communities they reach have less access to fresh, healthy food than others. Bringing it right to people’s doorsteps and giving them a discount is what we mean when we say HealthyCT does things differently from other health insurance companies.”

“Sow Fresh Organics’ partnership with HealthyCT offers us another means to reach Connecticut residents concerned with maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle,” said Karen Thiruvalam, Sow Fresh Organics co-founder. “The partnering of health insurance providers, like HealthyCT and local food hubs, like Sow Fresh, makes sense in that we’re both trying to encourage others to make healthy choices for their families.”

The initiative aims to remove barriers to accessing fresh, local food for HealthyCT members and non-members. Farmers’ markets and produce stands may not be open or accessible due to their hours, location or other reasons. HealthyCT’s healthy eating project provides free delivery of goods and a 10% discount to anyone in the distribution area who purchases through www.HealthyCT.org. On July 30, HealthyCT and Stamford-based Fresh Nation announced a national pilot for the healthy eating initiative, which at the time, was only available within Fresh Nation’s distribution area in Fairfield County. It marked the first time a health insurance company engaged in direct support of healthy eating as part of a wellness program.

The Sow Fresh Organics distribution area includes all or parts of the following communities (check the Sow Fresh Organics website to verify availability of delivery): Avon, Berlin, Bolton, Branford, Broad Brook, Centerbrook, Chester, Clinton, Cobalt, Colchester, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Berlin, East Glastonbury, East Haddam, East Hampton, East Hartford, East Haven, East Lyme, East Windsor, Ellington, Essex, Farmington, Glastonbury, Groton, Guilford, Haddam, Hartford, Higganum, Ivoryton, Killingworth, Ledyard, Madison, Manchester, Meriden, Middle Haddam, Middlefield, Middletown, Moodus, Mystic, New Britain, New Haven, New London, Newington, Niantic, North Branford, North Haven, Northford, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Plainville, Portland, Quaker Hill, Rockfall, Rocky Hill, Salem, South Glastonbury, South Lyme, South Windsor, Southington, Tolland, Vernon-Rockville, Wallingford, Waterford, West Hartford, Westbrook, Wethersfield, Windsor, Windsor Locks.
