HealthyCT Enrollment Ride highlights insurance deadline

HealthyCT Enrollment Ride highlights upcoming insurance sign-up deadline: 80-mile cycling tour visits five enrollment centers

HealthyCT, Connecticut’s non-profit health insurance CO-OP, today is sponsoring an 80-mile cycling tour of five open enrollment centers across the state to bring attention to the upcoming deadline to sign up for health insurance. Consumers must enroll by Monday, Dec. 15, to be eligible for health insurance coverage on January 1.

To highlight the sign-up deadline, the Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program Pro-am team is riding a route with stops at five consumer enrollment centers. The route begins at the Access Health CT Enrollment Center in New Britain, then goes on to the Compass Health Insurance Enrollment Centers in Waterbury and Bridgeport before moving east to the Access Health CT center on Church Street in New Haven. The ride ends at the Compass Health Insurance Enrollment Center on Whalley Avenue in New Haven.

HealthyCT is a year-round sponsor of the CCAP to promote the benefits of cycling whether at the amateur or professional level. The team wears HealthyCT orange footwear as part of its uniform. The enrollment ride serves the dual purpose of using a healthy activity to promote an important message about the importance of being insured.

“Although open enrollment continues through February 15, there are thousands of Connecticut residents who don’t realize that Monday is the deadline to enroll to have health insurance on January 1,” said HealthyCT CEO Ken Lalime. “There are enrollment centers open this weekend to help consumers make these important decisions, and we thought a cycling tour was a good way to send a healthy message about them.”

In fact, one member of the CCAP can’t participate in the ride due to injury, but Tim Ahearn was able to have needed wrist surgery because he was covered by insurance he signed up for through the state health insurance exchange, Access Health CT.

“I was injured at the Connecticut Cycling Festival in September,” said the Woodstock resident. “The surgery is not something I would have been able to afford without insurance, but because I was able to have it, I now look forward to returning to the sport I love. I will be racing – and winning – again.”
